You won't think you need SSL/TLS until a hacker manages to deface your (HTTP-only) site and puts ads or malware into your HTML pages. That is what can happen if you don't use HTTPS. HTTPS does far more than that though. I really don't see how it puts strain on the end user, only the server administrator. And even that strain is starting to go away with utilities like letsecrypt and web servers like Caddy which use HTTP/2 and can auto-renew your certificates for you.
