Re: I think we need longer topic tittles.

I agree with what many people say, however I have run into the limit before. For the record, I tested said limit and you only have 70 characters for your topic title.

I do understand that 70 characters is enough to post a summary or title to most ideas. But I can also see why it isn't. When posting about a technical topic, or a topic that involves several things at once, where a more verbose subject seems appropriate, I tend to like to post longer titles with the belief that a detailed title will let you know right away if you're interested in the thread or not.

Here's an example: When I see something like "question about Android," well part of me is somewhat interested because I do own an Android device, admittedly one which I don't have much love for, but I do have one and I got it for the purposes of learning the os. I wish I'd done more research before getting it, but that's another story. Anyway, part of me is interested just to learn more about the os, but odds are that the thread will be uninteresting to me as most people use their Android devices for things that I don't often want to do. But if the title is something like "good recorders for Android that let me record without audio processing," then I am very interested and will immediately look at the thread. This title pushes us right to the 70 character limit. Admittedly there are ways to shorten this, such as "recording on Android without audio processing," or perhaps for the less technically minded, "good recorders for Android." Any of these would work, making the character limit little more than a slight annoyance. Different topics will require more or less condensing depending on what you want to say in your subject. In any case, a character limit does make you check that your subject is typed before it's posted, and some people don't do that, which leads to cut off subjects. For me, that's more annoying than the limit itself.

I'm not advocating super long titles. I understand that brevity is something valuable that we all must learn to attain to some degree. Even so, I'm verbose myself. I hate removing words for the sake of condensing something. I don't hate it because I'm opposed to it, I hate it because I'm afraid of how my message will come across once I remove words. But this is just a personal quirk I have. I envy people who don't have the compulsion to write down every detail which crosses their mind.
