Its generally wise to equalise the characters if you can, or at least spread things around since there are some the game forces you to play with one or other character like the dream sequences.
Also, practice dragon strike scrolls in the pause menu. They're rather tedious to perform, especially the really long ones, and some are down right annoying, but they pay off in the end, though if your fighting a boss and have to choose between more powerful dragonstrike you can perform %50 of the time, or one a level below you can perform %100 of the time, go for the more reliable one.
finding your way around can be a little time consuming at points, so its goo to remember what direction you've been when and if there is a way you haven't explored.
I actually need to get back to paladin of the skies myself, I wasn't doing badly but was finding the game too draggy with the longer scrolls , though I'd probably try agai from the beginning and try to get all cosmic dusts and items along the way.
I had a similar issue with Manamon even with Jayde's walkthru. I suspect it is the lack of environmental atmosphere and description.
