Thoughts on Shoehorning unrelated content into works of entertainment.
Hi all,
I've been thinking about this for a while, and would like to get some more thoughts concerning this matter. I realize this might become very opinionated, but I'd like to have an honest discussion as to why this is being pushed more and more. I have observed over the years that more and more programs are having unnecessary content shoehorned into them. Here are a couple of examples.
1. The lesbian lawyer in Jessica Jones. Seriously, why? Why is this character even necessary, and why is it necessary to spend so much time on the fact she likes women? The series is about a superhero fighting bad guys, and this has nothing to do with that! Why?
2. Derek Landy's latest Skulduggery Pleasant books are full of unnecessary crap. Those who have been paying attention for a while may or may not know that I love the Skulduggery Pleasant series. It's basically about a living skeleton who has magic and his sidekick as they battle evil gods, sorcerers, and other beings trying to take over the world. The first 9 books were awesome because they focused on that subject matter specifically.
Beginning with book 10, he started introducing all sorts of frankly unnecessary and unwelcome crap into the series. There are many jabs at Donald Trump, comments about immigration, trans characters, etc. My question is simply this. What does any of that have to do with a world of magic and adventure? Why are you tainting an otherwise good story with this crap? Again, this is an honest question designed to start a good conversation. I really want to know.
Here are my thoughts concerning this. NO matter your views, wouldn't you agree that stuff like this should be put into its own dedicated genre? If you want books or movies about politics in the real world, create new ones specifically focusing on these topics! The same goes for everything else! Why are people ruining otherwise great content with this unnecessary nonsense? When I read fantasy or tune into a fantasy program on TV, I don't want to know about these things. If I ever get around to writing fantasy, it won't contain any of this nonsense.
