Taking lessons isn't always necessarily the easy way out. In fact, I encourage you to see what you're capable of first before going to an instructor for further playing.
I'd suggest getting use to the layout of the guitar, whether it be positioning your fingers on the frets and conditioning your finger strength, or adjusting to a picking pattern with a plectrum.
