The term "virtual window" is quite misleading, IMO; call it what it is -- a state machine. I have never once heard the term "Virtual Window" in game development lingo and that just sounds wrong to me. Your game runs in a single window, and everything else is a state. Your pause menu is a state (or something like that). You transition between states, or you can pause a state and resume it later. You can directly switch to another state, without the transition... that makes a lot more sense than calling it a "virtual window".
