Definitely playable, actually. Selecting events and characters can be done with a little poking around in the menus and clicking on things, as an announcer reads most of what you click on.
As for the events themselves, there is really only one that is definitely not playable, which is Sport Climbing. Stuff like Table Tennis or Badminton can be managed easily due to the good audio cues and stereo panning of the ball/birdie. None of the games sulport touch controls, because then these games couldn't be plafor on a TV.
