Don't buy a phone that's locked to a carrier. This way, you'll avoid extra carrier specific bloatware and will receive updates directly from the manufacturer.
I don't know about any good phones aside from something like the pixel 3a. Samsung is horrible when it comes to supporting their devices for more than a year or two last I checked, and I've heard everyone else is about the same.
