OK. There is a gesture to open the notification shade. If I remember correctly, if you double click the power button, i think that can do that. You've gotta swipe down with 2 fingers, or alternatively, you can hit one of the notification icons in your lock screen and it will pop right up. As for the fingerprint, I've never encountered that problem. Move your finger around, let it get all the edges and angles.
If you managed to set up your fingerprint, you can also activate the shade via touching the sensor. I miss my fingerprint scanner. My Tab A doesn't have one of those and I'm sick of having to slide in my pattern all the time.
