I think it's important to remember that, while the media is definitely focusing on protests and the like, it hasn't stopped following Covid-19. It's also important to remember that this pandemic has been running for over three months now. Some of the oarlier hysteria is gone now, and a lot of places are tentatively opening back up. There's only so much flipping out anyone can do over anything before some sense of normalcy is established, and that has happened with the virus, I think.
So was it hyped? Yes, I'd say it was. Overhyped though? I'm not prepared to say that, precisely because of the hundreds of thousands of lives it has ended, and the tens of millions it has deeply affected. I think screaming about how overhyped something is would be kind of disrespectful at the very least under the circumstances.
