Personally I'd rather use gnome classic, but that's just me I guess. Unity is certainly a nice desktop... If you're sighted. It certainly has a lot of issues, especially where it comes to the dash and the launcher. As for the OS its self, its not bad at all.
Talking about accessible FTP clients, I thought file zilla was cross platform?
