Yep, the game can be brutal like that . You cannot send multiple crew on a mission in one go, but you can send a single one by saying something like "send science on a mission to Pandemic" or "send medical on a mission to deal with panel explosion".
As for targeting without the numbers, I was having difficulties making that work properly. Also the numbers for the ships are there to avoid targeting the wrong target when you have two of the same type. To get the health of a ship, you can say threat information followed by the target name. But as you play you will memorize the health amounts of the ships and won't need to use that command at all
