Re: Who all read and liked this series? If you don't like, that's fine too

Well Cw, the issue I tend to find with political bias in books isn't so much whether I agree with it, as that it creates very shallow and sterriotypical characters and situations, mostly because authors with a heavy right wing bias also tend to be aggressively pro their country and anti everywhere else, (I'm afraid usually this tends to be america, though I can think of several English varients too), often extremely sexist, homophobic and to maintain the belief that over baring force is an adequate solution to any problem.

For example, Mark Tufo's zombie surviver series, though having little to do with politics are very much written from a right wing perspective. Every male character behaved like an immature idiot, making jokes about toilet humour (when not giving long and boring rants about family, God and a man's duty), women were universally assigned to either look pretty or cook, and the principle conflict in the book (aside from the obvious zombies), was the main character yelling at various people he thought were weak or ill prepared or whatever, , ---- actually I wanted to see the zombies eat him big_smile. Compare this to say Michael in We're alive who is clearly just trying to do his best in a bad situation and doesn't try to behave like the drill sergeant to the entire world, and realizes that while there are times to give orders you actually need to listen to people as well big_smile.

I've similarly noticed books with this sort of political bias (mostly because of their shalow characterization), also tend to have fairly invincible heroes, as well as pathetic female characters and uninteresting romantic subplots.

This tends to be what I mean by political bias, more than how you actually view the roll of th e government towards it's people. Perhaps the word conservative as opposed to right wing would've been more accurate.

Btw, left wing doesn't actually mean sitting around and relying on the government, it's basically the idea that the government has some responsability towards promoting people's freedom and making sure nobody can impose themselves too much on others, it's about promoting freedom of everyone rather than just considdering the strongest at the top.

On a basic level this forum is run on relatively left wing grounds.
