Re: Corona Virus: is it the beginning of the end?

Accman, basically what you're saying is that you'll be part of the solution, maybe, if either 1. someone makes you do it by making it law or 2. someone else does all the work for you. This still doesn't get you off the hook.

To use your grocery store example, please remember that the people who work there, who have been open pretty much this whole time and risking their safety to serve you, have to deal with customers every day. These employees are very likely required to mask up, and that's good, but as you've rightly pointed out, masks aren't perfect. They help, but they're not perfect. Every random customer who walks through the door without a mask is going to contribute to the anxiety of the employees in that store, even if the customer doesn't appear sick. Everyone who walks in without a mask might very well -be sick, after all, and not know it. Don't be one of those people. If you truly want to help the economy, you're doing a piss-poor job of respecting those who had to stay at work during this pandemic. By and large, the pay of these essential workers was not increased, but they were asked to work in an environment where they might sicken and die. I'd say medical workers have it worst, but grocery stores and the like have it pretty bad as well. Every time you step through a grocery store door without a mask on, you are contributing to the problem in a small way. Not only are you risking the safety of those around you, but you're also technically risking your own safety. On that point, if you lived alone and didn't have any friends or family, fine, go ahead, risk your safety I guess. But you have a wife and daughter; if I were your family member in a case like this, I would be thoroughly disgusted with you...more than I already am, I mean.

As far as shutdowns go, I knew that we would have spikes after shutdown. That just goes without saying. We cannot and must not characterize this problem as a cycle that will happen forever; rather, shutdowns are a sign that too many people are not obeying health guidelines and are communicating the virus. Perhaps if there is another full shutdown - which would suck, by the way - it is of shorter duration, and also results in the wearing of masks in public spaces being forced into law in affected areas. This won't completely solve the problem, but it will definitely help. If people can't do the right thing on their own, they should be made to do it with sanctions if that's what it takes. Every person refusing to follow health guidelines is in a small way contributing to the problem.
