I expect robot guide dogs within 10 years at the latest, or at least the technology to make them. Not sure if anyone will run with it. But Seeing AI already does room descriptions, lidar for self-driving cars is becoming ever more portable, and what a lot of people don't know is that Google made a dedicated AI chip that's 4 or 5 times more powerful than a GPU because it's only available via their datacenters and is too boring to make the news. We can already basically take a neural network and put it in silicon, and lots of people are working very hard on making that cheap, so your robot guide dog won't need the cloud for anything.
If I had the ability to do electronics without dragging sighted people into it, I'd honestly be tempted to try now, because I'm pretty sure that we could do something neat even as things stand. It seems like the sort of problem where half the battle is going to be the same thing we have with screen readers: sighted people don't understand the problem enough to make something good for us.
