Basically you can do it in any order you wish. There will be a point when you will be locked during story or battle segments as you will need to achieve some condition like: STart someone's story, unseal mysteries, defeat some waves of enemies etc so you can do it like you wish.
To be honest this game requires OCR in all the places just to read stuff even in the story. For example at the beginning of the stories (or somewhere in the middle) you can see what year it is, and some contextual stuff. Not that important but it is always good to know.
