Re: Discussion of the 2020 American Federal Election

Accman, I think you're making another bad-faith argument. Unlike the typical bad-faith arguments I cite you for though, I don't think you're intending this one.

First of all, the impeachment attempt was not baseless. It didn't work, but there was plenty of precedent for it. Unless, of course, you also want to say that the republicans trying to impeach Bill Clinton in the 90s were also wasting time?

Second and far more important: let's assume for just a moment that we live in a reality where that impeachment attempt was baseless, and should never have happened. Those democrats who were involved were not responsible for mobilizing a national response to Covid-19. Those democrats did not and do not control the senate, so they have never during this pandemic enjoyed the freedom to ram certain acts into law in order to protect the common good. Those democrats were never in a position to do what was necessary to stop or slow down Covid-19. Let's also remember that the majority of impeachment issues were dealt with by mid-January.

I feel like you're misconstruing the situation here. If democrats were ignoring important legislation on the table because they were still trying to chase Trump, then okay, that's fine. You'd have a point. But I have yet to see any indication that this happened. When impeachment proceedings were active, Covid-19 was not yet perceived as a global threat, not by America at large and definitely not by Donald Trump himself. It's not fair in the slightest to blame democrats for trying to impeach the president, and for further trying to tie this to their pandemic response. That's a lot like me saying that posting on this forum, and compelling me to respond to it, is taking away from time I want to spend with friends. You can't possibly know that, and it's emotionally and morally suspect to try and play that card.

If you want to hold that the impeachment was unnecessary and politically motivated, that's fine. We disagree, but I'll leave it alone.
But if you want to argue that the impeachment is tied to how democrats further didn't handle the virus well, and made it so that Trump couldn't either? I'm sorry, but that's just not intellectually honest. It's not in keeping with the reality we are all living in.

By and large, it was Donald Trump's responsibility to mobilize the country in a time of crisis. Not only did he not do this, he lied about it in order to save face. He downplayed the danger, caused people to follow him, and was the indirect cause of far more deaths than needed to have occurred. Democrats didn't do that. Trump did that. Democrats weren't responsible for doing all these things; Trump was. Please place the blame where it belongs.
