You shouldn't have to conditionally set values to None unless your library has globals.  If it doesn't have globals, then the only thing that should be sad about the imports is mypy or something, which can be ignored.

I'm not saying don't put coroutines in earwax, just don't make them the way Earwax expects to work.  But that said, it's a library that's going to be primarily used by new and new-ish programmers, so chances are that people mostly won't actually know how to deal with those state problems, I'm afraid.
