Honk, you make a good point. If he had framed it as a soft lock, then yeah, it's absolutely good for teaching game design. The first time I entered this area, realized that it was possible to junk the diver's gear, I knew it was possible to soft-lock the game. It's just flawed game design, pure and simple.
Where I objected was in calling it some sort of "challenge". It's not a challenge; it's a soft lock. End of story.
