Either way, I'll explain my experience here.
I was born into a Spanish-speaking family in the US. For the first 5 or so years of my life, I only spoke Spanish at home with my parents and other family. After about 2 or 3 years enrolled in the US education system, I started to pick up English. So, although English is not my first language, I did have the luxury of living in the US, which afforded me easy access to immersion, while simultaneously maintaining my Spanish-speaking abilities. Now I can read and write in both languages at a collegiate level, while also knowing other languages.
