You're talking to someone who's beaten multiple pokemon games with absolutely no sight. As far as how I did it? For most of it, I literally step-counted, and grid-searched. A lot of ladders in caves aren't built flush against walls, but when I'd move around enough, I'd start figuring out that there were dead ends, sometimes with items and sometimes with ladders and sometimes just to screw with me. Point is, I would never get all the items, and it would take me awhile, but it wasn't really all that bad for me. This is why I generally insist on following walls, and why in the Manamon series it's really, really difficult to get me lost. In fact, the hardest area for me in the original RBY was either the Rocket game corner (which I basically couldn't do on my own without help of some variety) or Victory Road (which I couldn't do solo till I read several guides and sort of amalgamated a walkthrough which made sense.
Scripting Emerald would be amazing. Not likely anytime soon, I suspect, but still amazing. I, too, have fond memories of that game, and being able to know personalities, abilities, berries, hold items, all that jazz, would be really neat.
