I have that position thing turned off, but that's I think 10% of the beat because it's set to beats / bars by default. So not really relevant here. You can configure that in the CTRL+F12 dialog. If you press ALT+P, you will cycle through three ripple modes. Per track, all tracks and off. Ripple nudges items back to back not preserving time in between. This is useful for when you want to chop beginnings and ends. Go to where you want it to clip with ripple on the per track mode, hit A, hit CTRL+left to select the first item then delete it. The remaining item has been moved to the start of the project since no other items were there. If there was another item, the one after the one you deleted would have it's position moved such that it's start matches the other item's end.
There is a difference between hitting space and CTRL+space. Space on its own will start playing, and pressed again will stop, making the play head jump back to the edit cursor. If you hit CTRL+space, this pauses playback such that the edit cursor moves to match the play head.
