Me, personally, I think I'd like this game more if it was a bit more story-driven. Having missions that just ask you to perform x number of quests is just another stock quest, basically, and I don't find that especially interesting. Also, explore x number of rooms? Same deal.
That being said, I'm well aware that story-based stuff is way, way harder to do most of the time.
Alter Aeon is an example of a mud that gets this right in a lot of cases. Talk to an NPC, go into a dungeon, fight for awhile, look for stuff, kill a boss, get loot, come back, talk to NPC, he wants you to go talk to someone else who sends you someplace new.
I like that sort of story chain thing, and it's rare in MUDs.
