Re: Creating a code free RPG using Sable(video 14), by Ebon Sky Studios
Hi,
Great to see people still so excited about Sable. Following on from what Threeblacknoises wrote about documenting ideas, game design elements etc, this is a really good idea and really helps overall game development. The game design team here have taken that approach with Crimson Eclipse, they have all the design work down in excel spreadsheets and notepads, everything from each enemy and detailing everything from their stats, general information, abilities, drops etc, the same for all equipment abilities and player class’s, this has allowed them to tackle things like balance before its even been input into Sable. Regarding scrips they have a full script for Crimson Eclipse (which looks similar to a play write script with each individuals exact speech lines set out or each cut scene fully described, just like a play or film the script has gone through various drafts and revisions to ensure that when it goes into Sable the game design team have everything prepared. They even have a notepad document for each map in Sable, what should be in each map and even what sounds are required for each map. On top of all of that they have created a separate document which details the world, its inhabitants, game law, magic systems etc , not all of that will even make it into the game but is there just so they have a full understanding and connection with the world/game they are building, I’ve seen and read all the documents and its fascinating to see some of the detail. A huge amount of preparation has gone in from the game design team to ensure we can deliver a well thought out game, with interesting mechanics and great storyline. But definitely pre planning and preparation are key to making a good, well balanced and engaging game, so its really great to see people already thinking like this and before Sable has even been released, it really does make me excited to see the games that everyone produces.
