That's kind of how the game works. Punishing won't really influence what your hero does or writes. It mainly influences how much damage he does. The darker his personality the more damage. And there's some other, more minor effects to personality you can see in the wiki. God voices are meant to fail sometimes. There's a daily forecast you can read in the godville times, which introduces three random effects every day. Some of those effects have to do with how receptive heros are to god voices.
As for the temple, it's supposed to take a long ass time to complete. you can speed it up though by winning arena fights or influencing when your hero has more than 3k gold. That will sometimes melt the gold into a brick. But don't do it so much that he can never buy things like skills or equipment, because that makes him more powerful allowing for faster progression, etc.
Regarding the pet, that's true. In the first few levels, the pet is pretty useless. But at higher levels, he will often interfear in fights which will damage monsters. Just make sure your hero is at reasonable health for most of the time, because if your hero dies, there's a chance his pet will take the hit instead of the hero which will knock it out. If you don't get enough gold together in time when that happens, the pet becomes useless and won't level anymore.
