I use Skype Talking which runs alongside the Skype client.
I find it superior to GwConnect. Here's how I went about making it simple and easy to use. Install skype talking. Then, allow it to have access to Skype. Then, go into skype and set it to compact view. Then, go into the options and set them to your liking.
Now, using skype talking's settings, set those to start with skype, and make the keybindings to your liking. Personally I have ctrl f1 to read last message, ctrl shift f1 to change the conversation, ETC.
Delete your skype icon, and rename the skype talking icon to skype. Now, you've got full, easy access to Skype. Note, Skype talking is not needed at all to use skype. It's completely accessible without it, but this is useful to read chats and make calls outside of the window.
