I'd never want to listen to a bf story without headphones myself. The audio is far too good to miss, and even on my good speakers I would miss quite a bit.
Often I have found that the audio in some stories actually goes a way to redeaming the story's inadequacy, for example I thought second Charley Pollard story, Shadow at the edge of the world was probably my least favourite of the series, but I have to say the monsters, the Slaverings in the story sounded great!
I have been listening to some of the back catalogue recently, and whispers of terror quite impressed me for this. As a story I had a few issues with it, particularly the fact that ooh look, bf's only blind character has to be an old man obsessed with audio recordings (not sterriotyped at all then), however the sound creature was brilliantly realized and just sounded lovely through my Sanheisas.
