Not a guess, but I think when you switch to the ime, you need to close the ime so that the keyboard functions regularly. Space and enter do not work the same when the IME itself is open, so once you've switched keyboards make sure your IME is closed. the windows 7 keystroke is alt+`, but I'm not sure if the windows 8 keystroke is the same since a lot of language commands are changed in 8.
