Agreed again. Hence why I said indie developers would be a better place to start. True that anyone in a company can have possible influence, but of course the higher ups aren't quite as guaranteed to listen to them. Skullgirls is a great example of something that works when a developer is receptive, and that's one heck of a stepping stone.
