Interestingly, Steampunk is actually an offshoot of Cyberpunk, rather than a direct controdiction, and it seems strange, but the term Cyberpunk was first used to describe what the teenagers of the mature internet age might be like, in the eyes of a short story writer, and was kind of an on the spot, half joke term, used during an interview, that later came to mean something else entirely, as a literary culture grew up around it, the one you see today in MUDS like Awakened Worlds and Cybersphere, for instance.
Steampunk is actually the most successful branch, going based on popularity and social awareness, even more so than Cyberpunk it's self, and in fact, the more clockwork oriented part of it has it's own, not often used away from Steampunk circles term, Clockpunk.
Also, while the Victorian era is the troditionally recognized setting for Steampunk literature, there has been a relatively recent influx of more technologically advanced, more histor ically accurate, American civil war era Steampunk and Clockpunk in that area.
A good example is the five book miniseries, "Clockwork Century", by "Cherie Priest", written in 2009. It was also dramatized by Graphic Audio in 2014.
While Cyberpunk is often post nuclear opocolops, corprit controlled, crime heavy, metropolis and badlands style with elements of technomancy, cybernetic enhancement, often for combat, AI, virtual reality, and augmented network and communications access provided through direct neural link, Steampunk often has some element of post opocolips as well, sometimes including some form of zombies, as well as magic elements as Dark mentioned, and real world conflicts used in a fictional way, air pirates, limb replacements, complex gadgets and weapons, dark plots, brilliant, both good and evil inventers, and utopian metropolis's are strongly featured.
