Re: Let's Discuss Everything About Star Trek
Well, as for myself I have always been a very big Star Trek fan. Although, since Voyager ended and they destroyed Data in Nemesis my interest has waned somewhat. The last two films all but ended my interest in Star Trek as a series, because they killed it by trying to rewrite history in order to bring back the original crew.
That said, in the 90's when my interest in Star Trek was at its peak I collected everything and anything I could get dealing with Star Trek. I have a huge collection of Next Generation, Deep Space 9, and Voyager action figures. I have stacks of paperback books which I have read. I had posters which I hung on my wall, and even some models of the various starships I displayed around my bedroom growing up. I still own most of that stuff, but it is packed up in plastic containers and in storage since I don't really have any place to display it these days. Plus I suppose a lack of interest to do so as well.
As for the Star Trek shows themselve s go by far Next Generation is and probably forever will be my favorite of all the various series. They really had good character development and a great cast of actors and actresses to play them. Plus most of the storylines for the show were interesting and really caught my attention.
I initially wasn't too much a fan of Deep Space 9 in the beginning. I mainly watched it because there wasn't anything else good on at that time to watch it so I did. However, in hindsight I think I liked it more in reruns once I could see the entire storyline from beginning to end and was able to pick and choose which episodes I wanted to see. Like any long running series Deep Space 9 had its high points and some low points. Being able to judge it as an entire series rather than on a per weekly basis changed my attitude about it and I like it more now than I did when the show first aired.
As for Voyager I have mixed feelings about that series. When the show aired I really loved i t because it went back to the exploration aspect I liked about Next Generation and the original series. Plus the aspect that it had a mixed crew of terrorists and Federation officers added an element of intrigue that they didn't really build upon after the first season or so. In short, I think Voyager had a lot of potential, but they never capitalized on it.. As Dark said it seems after the fifth season it became the Seven of Nine show and every other episode required Seven resolving the problem with some Borg technology etc. That sort of ruined the plot for me somewhat. However, I watched the entire show until the end and over all enjoyed the series for the most part.
As for the two new movies I could probably rant for hours about how much I hate them. Well, hate is probably too strong a term. I could watch them once as movies, but I don't consider them Star Trek in any way shape or form because the producers screwed the storyline and it is clear all they wanted to do was borrow the Star Trek name and original characters to make money. It is clear whoever wrote the screen play knew nothing about or truly cared about the cannon since they made a number of changes that I can not and will not accept. Destroying Vulcan, killing Spock's mother Amanda, the romantic relationship between Uhora and Spock, among other things was beyond terrible. I also did not care for the new Dr. Carol Markus. Somehow the actress who played her just felt altogether wrong. So without further ado I'll stop before I write a huge rant about the new movies.
