in real life, if you can see the light and have whatever directional tool on hand, or can asume the direction by using some unmovable object around as the base, if you know what direction it stands of course, it's not hard at all to face any direction given, unless you don't know for real of what direction is that way you turn. In this case, Survive the wild, though based on something real, shouldn't give too much limit for it. Ever heard of how scouts check direction when they have no tool? They check which way light comes from by looking at the tree. Anyway, because Sam likes it to be as realistic as possible, sun can't help at all at night, instead, the direction can be easily checked by looking at the northstar. Let's see if you can come up with something in stw that related to this fact.
