The recent posts give me some additional things to consider, thanks everyone.
I just checked out the AVS forum (www.avsforum.com) there are a lot of people who have paired a Denon with Paradigms and they have wonderful things to say about their setups. Either something is wrong with my setup (room acoustics may be the problem - it has a cathedral ceiling and lots of windows so not sound-friendly) or I have higher expectations about what sounds good. Or maybe I'm not as eloquent when describing what I hear. It sounds OK, decent, good even but not great. I want it to sound great but I'm not sure what great sounds like and I don't know how to achieve it but I think I have all (or almost all) the pieces to make it sound great. At least I hope so. Time to tack up some blankets or pillows in different locations to see if that makes a difference.
