OK then: what components have you used to digitally record LPs which
were good enough to expose an audible difference between 16/44.1 and
some higher resolution (say 24/88.2 or similar)?

By what mechanism? A ground loop is the only one that occurs to me, and
I can assure you that this isn't the case in my transfer setup.
