If I do reliably hear a difference (and manage to pin it to the correct
setting) it would prove that there is a difference. (In my particular
setup.)

If I do not reliably hear a difference, or fail to pin it to the
correct setting, it proves nothing. (Except that I was unable to hear
any difference with my system, and myself at that particular time.)

Also, I did try to describe the limitations of A/B'ing in some detail.
Those limitations may play a part in such a test. Other limitations
that I haven't mentioned before include the auditory systems ability to
adapt to the current sound (with a hysteres-effect) -meaning that
judging sound quality in absolute terms may be impossible in A/B test.
(Admittedly this effect may not influence detecting if there is a
difference.)
