You will still need some form of regulation and smoothing - batteries
produce electrical noise through their chemical reaction - if you are
coming straight off the battery. If you are suggesting plugging your
SB3 PSU into a UPS it will sound worse as almost all UPS's are designed
for PC's and the waveform they output is not sinusoidal. This is why
there are very few high end audio devices using battery power. One is

There are a lot of people designing iPod headphone amplifiers using
batteries but as they are for portable use it is not surprising.
