It seems completely obvious to me now but keeping the Transporter volume set to -25Db and turning the amplifier volume up to compensate produces a much better sound than turning the Transporter volume up.
I assume this was what was planned all along? What is the theory here - more power to the amplifier driving the speakers better without deafening volumes? Anyway after doing this I am pretty convinced that the Transporter I have does out perform my Arcam CD82T. I can hear slightly more detail, such as a real wang on an electric bass guitar that was missing and there is more spacing on the various instruments. I also have gained the layout of the various instruments again in the sound stage. So I am happy again - and the CD player will get used when I want to save some electricity and turn off my server!
