See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capacitors

The electrolytic type has a finite life - there's an electrolytic paste
in them which dries out over a period of about 10-15 years (?)

Incidentally I just started noticing a new type of capacitor, the
"solid" type. (The first time I noticed them was in shots of the SB2
internals). The look like small metal cans - no plastic wrap or stress
relief bends on top like the electolytics. Apparently they contain a
conductive polymer. No liquid pastes to dry out, life estimates are in
the ~25 year range. I'm not 100% sure, but they may also be smaller for
a given capacity, although I haven't seen any really big capacity ones.
