That first link refutes my advice, so best take a look at it before
placing the sub.

However I can't say I agree with their advice regarding placement
always in the corner.  Most of the time that leads to boomy bass for
me.  But I find it gets much better if I move the sub out from the
corner a bit - even 6" is an improvement.
