I was getting more at how non-linear the relationship between sound quality and cost can be with "audiophile" gear.
At a hi-end hifi show, I once witnessed a designer from a small scale (new) speaker manufactuer discussing pricing with a dealer of a two-speaker system they were launching. They were litterally picking numbers out of the air...really scary to listen to.
