If you have some music that can be so improved by a simple tone
adjustment, wouldn't the best solution be to rip the CD, use an audio
editor to make those tone adjustments, and then either burn them back
to CD or load them into SlimServer?

In other words, if you've identified a disc that has problems that can
be corrected in such a manner, why not just modify the disc so that it
no longer sounds wrong--and why not simply throw out the disc that
sounds wrong when you're done?  Then you don't need tone controls, and
you also don't have to reset everything back to normal when you play a
different disc.
