I helped my father audition speakers in this price range and without hesitation went for the NHT's Classic 3. I cannot recommend them more, find a dealer and audition them you wont regret it.
But if you want to buy used, it all depends on how good of a deal you get, I love the transparency and ultra high resolution of Reference 3A speakers, and you could get a used pair of Dulcet's for less than 1000.
