I think you'll want to use the volume control on the SB once you get
everything adjusted right.  Sure, if you reduce the volume a lot on the
SB you'll effect sound quality, but it's designed for this purpose and
the first 10 or 20% of volume reduction on the SB won't hurt a thing.
