The AudioEngine stuff is very good, both good gear and good value. There are a lot of powered monitors in the <$400 range, although these primarily target professional music & recording applications.
I bought a pair of Alesis M1-520's for $199 last December. These are nice little monitors. See www.alesis.com for details. I just recent found a source for these refurbished for $149/pr. The finish is less pretty than the AE gear, and the inputs are 1/4" 3 conductor ro XLR.
