Separate amplifiers for each driver with an upstream crossover is
technically the most accurate way to drive speakers and is also a cost
effective way in avoiding the cost of amplifier cabinets. $400 is
enough to buy amplifier/speakers of this type.

Go to a music shop and listen to a few monitors in your price range.
