I am guessing that the CD player had only a single output driver circuit
for both connectors, and furthermore that the speaker amplifier had a
relay muting circuit on its input that shorts the inputs when it is
powered off. Both are questionable design choices, especially the relay
muting. If required, that should be done after a buffer stage, or after
some high input impedance, so that the source does not see a short.

Transporter doesn't have a problem because it has separate output
drivers, and both have series resistors to provide short-circuit
protection.
