It is extremely unlikely that this is a problem with the SB3. Most likely the s/pdif input on your DAC is incorrectly wired. Yes, it happens even (actually, especially) on the rare, boutique stuff. Often times they will use specialty RCA connectors which may have an even worse impedance mismatch than the consumer ones (neither is designed for 75 ohm RF), or they will be connected with exotic looking wires internally, that are pretty looking but not at all appropriate for a transmission line. Same goes for the interconnect you're using - you may want to try using an ordinary but decent quality video cable instead. If you could provide a picture of the DAC's internals I may be able to give some more specific suggestions as to what the problem might be.
