The main advantage of replay gain is that you don't have to adjust the
volume between tracks because of loudness differences.
I don't exactly recall at what volume level data is actually lost but
it's considerably lower than the typical replay gain adjustment.
Sound quality is still affected because of the lower SNR.

If it's noticeable depends on your ears and your system.
You should try for yourself.

Or you can enable replay gain for casual listening and disable it for
critical listening.
