Very interesting. I used Joe Cocker - Sheffield Steel Track 1. I made a 225 VBR mp3 with Foobar(lame). Difference against FLAC is -75dB in the mix. Amplified a lot what's being lost is mostly part of the top end harmonics and "crack" of the snare drum. This is a very well recorded album with excellent drums vocal and bass in particular.
At 130 VBR... the differences are much more obvious ( only -42dB in the mix) - now you can hear bits of bass and vocal line being lost! - the difference track is very recognisable! - but... a quick a/b in the software between the flac and mp3 makes them sound quite close on first hearing. This really is fascinating... :) at 320 CBR there really isn't much in it at all!!! -- Phil Leigh You want to see the signal path BEFORE it gets onto a CD/vinyl...it ain't what you'd call minimal...
