(I'm assuming that another source through the preamp sounds OK)

It sounds like you are overloading the input to the Preamp. The
balanced input will have a larger overload margin than the unbalanced
ones and so will distort less.

First of all, I would open up the TP and set the internal attenuators
on the unbalanced TP output to -20dB and try again.


This seems odd, though. I can't find the input sensitivity specs for
the preamp but modern ones shouldn't suffer from this. The TP isn't
overly hot.

I would also do a xilinx reset (not sure how to do this on a TP).

If the problem remains, call support.
